Designing the Spelman Seminary Grounds
“Designing the Spelman Seminary Grounds,” an article by Art Clement, Senior Project Manager, was recently published in View, the magazine of the Library of American Landscape History.
After many years of working on both private and public HBCU campuses either as an architect, campus planner, and construction program manager, Art became interested in the relationships between campus development, presidential leadership, race relations, and architectural styles identified with certain historical periods. His passion for higher education and historic preservation projects led him to become an author.
Art is currently writing a book entitled, “The Architecture and Campus Development of Georgia’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities” for the University of Georgia Press. The book project explores these themes within the context of the evolution of higher education for African Americans in Georgia.
